Beauty Contests |
|
Beauty contests or pageants are competitions where young girls with unique physical attributes are judged on the basis of their looks, figure, confidence and sometimes awareness. Such contests are separately held for men as well. Judges of these contests usually include former beauty pageant winners, fashion designers, fashion critics and movie stars.

|
| The first beauty contest was held in America in the 1920s but these contests became popular only after World War II. Soon beauty contests began taking place in other parts of the world. Local, national and international beauty pageants are held every year and beauty contestants who win a national title represent their country in an international beauty contest.

Winners of international beauty pageants like Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Asia Pacific International, Miss Earth and Miss International become world famous overnight. Most beauty pageant winners either pursue a full time modeling career or acting career. There is a huge craze for beauty contests in the United States of America and India. Miss America and Miss India are national contests, where girls from different states represent their region. So far seven Miss USA winners have held the title of Miss Universe between 1954-1997. Susmita Sen was the first Indian to win the Miss Universe title in 1994 and in 2000, Lara Dutta became the second Indian to conquer the title.

| However the Miss World title has grown to be the most sought after and prestigious title in beauty pageantry. Five Indians have won this title. The Miss Universe crown is sponsered by Mikimoto while the Miss World crown is sponsored by Swarovski. International beauty pageants for male include Mr Universe, Mr World and Manhunt International.
