What started out as a family magazine in 1886 turned to a full-fledged women's magazine in 1965 when Helen Gurley Brown became the chief editor. She transformed the magazine and since the late 1960's the Cosmopolitan cover has carried pictures of women in sexy revealing clothes. The magazine features health, fitness, beauty and shopping tips along with some celebrity gossip and advice on sex and relationships.

In recent years the magazine has become more sexually overt in tone and also carries nude pictures of male models. The magazine also touches upon sensitive issues such as sexual abuse, rape and AIDS.

The editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan is Kate White. The magazine has been published in 32 languages, including Spanish, Swedish, Hebrew, Romanian, Russian and French. It has circulation in more than 100 countries worldwide. However, it was recently banned in Singapore. Every Cosmopolitan issue carries sections on sex & relationships, confessions, makeovers, Cosmo body and Cosmo quiz.
